Krishna consciousness is the term used by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada to describe the awareness of our relationship with Lord Krishna. As living entities (soul), we are part and parcel of Lord Krishna and therefore we are His eternal servants and our only duty is to serve Him. As a servant, we keep Krishna first in everything we do. All our activities and thoughts are oriented towards Lord Krishna’s pleasure.
A Hare Krishna devotee is Krishna conscious because he or she lives her life in a mood of servitude toward Krishna and His devotees. Therefore, his or her behavior and mentality reflect the bliss derived from learning to love Krishna by following scripture, in the context of living in the material world. For example, devotees offer their foodstuffs to Lord Krishna before eating, and therefore directly relish the Lord’s mercy in the form of His remnants. Devotees come from all walks of life; some are dedicated students living in temples, while other work in busy offices. In either case, each devotee is conscious of Krishna in his or her daily life at all times, and is therefore transcendental to the distresses inherent in the material world.
