Kirtana

Kirtan is the Sanskrit word for congregational chanting or singing of God's holy names. It consists of a lead singer who is most popularly accompanied by mrdangas (a drum originating from West Bengal), kartalas (cymbals), harmonium (a hand operated, mini-keyboard) and tambourines. The involving aspect of kirtan is such that it is not simply a musical performance involving a select number of people, but instead the lead singer sings a verse which is then repeated by everyone else. Often accompanied by dancing and lots of laughter and smiles, kirtan is one of the most jubilant ways to practice spirituality.
